Chapter 01

From the ground up

Chef Nathan Koscielski, CCE, known to his students as Chef K, is a culinary instructor and Associate Professor at Niagara Falls Culinary Institute and a prominent chef in Western New York.

In 2026 the American Culinary Federation (ACF) of Greater Buffalo named him Chef of the Year. In 2021 he became one of the first 50 chefs in the United States, and the first in New York State, to earn the ACF’s accreditation in culinary cannabis. Since then he has built a new educational direction: cooking with cannabis.

He had been teaching, experimenting and developing his own methods, but almost none of it was visible online.

We helped Chef K build an online presence that explains what he teaches, why this new field deserves to be taken seriously, how his approach works, who his courses are for and why he can be trusted.

He was starting from scratch. The goal was to create a professional presence where none existed.

Planting the seeds

We were starting from zero, with four gaps to close:

1. No central platform. No website and no structured place to present his services.

2. No clear messaging. The approach existed in practice but had never been put into words.

3. Few visual assets. No professional imagery to support a premium presentation.

4. A complex niche. Cannabis cooking needs careful explanation. It isn’t self-explanatory or mainstream.

So we treated it as building an expert brand from the ground up: not just a website, but a system that explains his work and builds trust.

Chapter 03

Phase 1: Positioning and messaging

We interviewed Chef Nathan Koscielski to define how he should be perceived. One of his concerns was that cannabis cooking still isn’t taken seriously, when in reality it’s a whole field that demands real knowledge and skill. So we agreed that his business should come across as professional, responsible and educational.

Then we translated his real-world knowledge into structured messaging:

  • culinary expertise

  • educational focus

  • responsible approach to cannabis

  • clarity for beginners and professionals

We wrote a full text prototype before any design began, so the structure was intentional from the start.

Chapter 04

Phase 2: Logo and visual identity

We created a custom logo and visual direction for The Cannabis Chef.

The identity needed to balance professionalism (culinary and educational), approachability and the specifics of a niche field.

It became the foundation for the website, social media, printed materials and future growth.

Phase 3: Photography

There was no professional imagery, so we created it.

Kitchen portraits

We shot the portraits in the professional kitchen of Savor, a restaurant in Niagara Falls, to establish credibility and personality.

Phase 4: Website design and structure

The site is organized around what visitors need to know:

  • Home (an overview of his work and his Culinary Cannabis Manual)

  • Who I Am (the chef’s bio and his journey into a new field)

  • Educational Programs (courses, webinars, and conferences)

  • Class Menu (dish examples with photography and selected recipes)

  • FAQ (his approach and philosophy)

  • In the Media (recent articles and interviews)

UX priorities:

  • immediate clarity

  • simple navigation

  • strong visual hierarchy

  • easy next steps

  • mobile-first experience

The result is a site that explains his work quickly without overwhelming visitors.

Phase 5: Extended brand work

In late 2025, Chef K completed the Culinary Cannabis Manual, a student handbook later printed by SUNY Niagara. We designed the cover to match the identity we created online, and both cover photos were shot by our studio specifically for the book.

Real-world outcome

Chef K says that when people ask about his approach, he simply sends them to his website, because it explains everything clearly in one place. The site is also the hub he points to from social media, turning scattered interest into real inquiries.

“What I enjoyed most about working with Ilya was the passion and personal connection he brought to the project. He didn’t just want to take my material and copy and paste it onto a website. He wanted to understand it so he could create something unique to me.

The passion, pride, professionalism and final outcome are second to none. My website focuses on culinary arts and cannabis, but I believe any business could benefit tremendously from Ilya’s experience and knowledge. The organization, the look, the features and the professionalism of the website really stand out.”
